Chapter 153: Saving lives
Damien paused and turned to look in the direction of the tent that was at the far corner of the main camp.
"Argh…"
"It hurts so much…"
"He–Help me."
Without letting Gavin and the others know where he was going, he headed to the camp from where the sound of mournful and painful yells and whimpers was coming from. Xavier saw him walk away and followed him at once.
"Where are you going, Lord Damien?" he asked.
Damien did not reply; instead, he continued to march forward. When he came to a stop at the mouth of the tent, from where the painful whimpers were coming from, he pushed open the flap of the tent and entered.
The second he stepped inside, the scent of blood almost knocked him out. The fishy scent was overflowing inside the tent as the beastmen lying on the ground were gravely injured.
'It was just as I expected,' Damien pursed his lips as he looked at the severely injured beastmen. Their injuries were too severe and because they could not be treated by the healers, they were left to die here.
They had placed all the beastmen who had no hope of surviving away from the camp, Damien couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable at the sight. Even if they knew that there was no chance of these beastmen surviving, couldn't they have at least tried to save them?
"Master Damien, what are you doing here?" Luke who followed Damien was surprised when he saw that Damien came to the camp where the severely injured beastmen were placed. "You should leave them alone and treat the ones outside. We will take a look at them later on."
Gavin, who was healing a soldier who had a cut on his leg, also straightened up when he heard the words of Luke. He walked over to where Damien was and agreed with Luke, "He is right. It's better to check on the patients who have the chance to survive rather than wasting time on those who are destined to die."
Though it sounded harsh, they had no other choice. Were they going to waste the precious time that they had in saving someone who had no chance of survival?
"....No," Damien stepped inside briskly as he rolled the sleeves of his shirt. "You can deal with the patients outside but these patients need me; I cannot waste anymore time. These are the patients who need urgent saving."
"Wh–what?"
"He–Hey, Lord Damien. I know that you feel sorry for them but there is nothing that you can do about them," said Robert with his hands spread in front of him helplessly.
"That's right, that's the reason they are gathered here."
While the other convinced Damien to leave, one of the beastmen on the ground blearily opened his eyes. He heard someone talk and heard a man talk about saving him and the rest of the gravely injured soldiers.
He knew that his condition was hopeless and he had already given up hope. But when he heard someone say that they were going to save them, he couldn't help but feel slightly more hopeful.
He stretched out his hand weakly and grasped hold of Damien's trousers.
"My lor–lord," pleaded the man. "Sa–Save me, p–please.. I have—I have a wife and a son… J–Just th–three years ol–old."
Damien glanced at the man as he crouched down by the side of the man. He studied the large porcupine thorn that was sticking out of the abdomen of the man.
"I will do whatever I can." He did not make any promises because he suspected the wound of the man was a stabbing one and not a simple penetration on the skin.
[Activating Eye of Observation.]
The skill activated at the smallest command of Damien and soon a large X -ray screen opened in front of Damien and started examining the condition of the man. It took three seconds before the condition of the internal organs of the man was displayed in front of Damien.
'Damn it,'
Damien cursed as his suspicions came true. It was just as he suspected. Though the majority of organs were alright, the porcupine thorn was sticking in the large intestine of the man. The bleeding was severe and Damien had no choice but to cut open the stomach of the patient.
When the man saw that Damien's expression had turned sombre after seeing his condition, he couldn't help but say, "Lo–my…my lor–lord, I –I don't want to d–die."
"Don't worry," Damien took his hand in his and spoke in a determined voice, "I can save you, just trust me."
He then turned to look at Xavier and said to him, "Bring me a table and a clean piece of cloth."
Xavier's eyes widened when he heard the swift commands of Damien but he still did as he was told.
Lives were at stake and they could not waste any time.
Xavier arranged for a clean table along with a few pieces of clean clothes that were sanitised by Damien.
Once the man was moved to the table, Damien pulled on the gloves and released the anaesthesia spell. He waited for a few minutes for the spell to take effect before studying the pulse and the breathing of the man.
"I will be opening the stomach of the patient now," he told the men behind him. "If you feel queasy, then you might as well leave now." Enjoy more content from мѵʟ
They might be used to healing people but Damien knew that seeing a person's body being cut open and sewn together might not be a sight that they would be able to stomach.
What–did he say? The three men were stumped; even Xavier was startled upon hearing Damien's words. He was going to start cutting the stomach of the man open?
How could that be done?
However, before anyone could even stop Damien, the latter had already summoned a scalpel, which he used to slice open the skin of the injured man.
