Chapter 164 Growth
Ethan frowned when he heard that… It seemed like an event that would happen in anime or manga. He couldn't see the point of that, even more so at such a period in time. It was suspicious if anything… that being said, maybe there was something else about that since those two were the ones sent, and they were the most famous students.
"You are supposed to be good at gathering Intel, right?" Emily asked. "Doing this kind of thing at such a time looks weird… and I am sure you think the same and went to investigate it."
"What if I did investigate it?" Ian asked. "While we are friends, this kind of information is hard to get, so what do you offer in exchange for it? I guess it will be fine if you two owe me one as well."
"Nah, I am fine," Ethan replied and then shrugged. "I can't see the point of learning about this… while it seems suspicious, I am sure that it isn't a bad move."
"You could be wrong about that," Ian said and also shrugged.
"About what exactly?" Ethan asked.
"Who knows…" Ian smiled.
Ian was being annoying again, Ethan wanted to kick him, but that would only make him enjoy the situation more. In any case, at least that troublesome atmosphere made Ethan think of changing his mood by training a bit. So, he activated the first mission.
"You two aren't fun, and I hope that those two that will come are funnier than you," Ian furrowed his eyebrows.
"So, you are looking for better friends?" Ethan asked. "I wholeheartedly wish you good luck with that."
"Yeah, right," Ian said. "Anyway, it looks like our country and Japan aren't the only ones doing this kind of thing with exchange students… many others are as well."
"That never happened before, and for them to be doing all at once… I get it," Emily showed a glint of understanding, but then she went silent.
Ethan also understood the issue… the exchange students were going all over the world to look for troublemakers that might be working for the enemies… those five returnees hadn't been found yet, and the governments believed that they hadn't left Earth yet, so they could only think that they were being helped… the most suspicious individuals would be other returnees in that regard. The exchange students' goals were to find those that might look suspicious. Dante and Aline would have a hard time doing that at their school but not in another country, and the inverse is also true.
"Things are getting even more complicated… in times of war, there are few things worse than traitors or spies," Emily muttered.
Without his power, Ethan wouldn't be able to confirm who would be an enemy or not, but trying to test everyone with it would be a bad choice… even though he might be able to learn a lot, he catches a single one of them and absorbs their memories.
"Anyway, we will need to be cooperative… even though aside from those two, we are the ones who looked less suspicious of all students," Ian said.
"I am not sure that actually applies to you…" Emily frowned. "You are by far the shadiest student here."
"Yeah, right… you can look all day and ask everyone if they know something suspicious about me, and you will find nothing," Ian shrugged.
"And that is exactly why you are so suspicious… you look too clean from a distance," Emily said. "Anyway, now that I know where that stupid girl is, I few like I can work a bit harder."
Emily got up as well and began to run around the area since Ethan didn't want to be helped in the fights. She also wanted to save her mana, so that worked for the better. As for Ian, he just watched those two training freaks while he was relaxing.
"It looks like things are going to get interesting yet again… I can't wait," Ian smirked while he was thinking about that.
Although Ethan could have tried his best to break his record and reach the sixteenth level on the simulator, he decided to just take it easy and focus on healing himself when the enemies hit him. Thanks to that, he managed to level up some of his resistance skills quite a bit.

Ethan felt quite a bit satisfied with the results… it took him the entire day since he didn't rush to kill all the enemies. Considering how things were changing, he felt that he would be better to become sturdier… even though it had been a while since he truly suffered a lot of damage from the enemies. In any case, he had been standing out to the enemies quite a bit, and he could tell that the difficulty in the fights in the future would increase.
In any case, when Ethan arrived at the school the next day, he found a large group of people standing around, and soon he found the exchange among them… it looked like things weren't going to be that peaceful. Ethan thought of that even more when one of them walked toward him.
Maybe it was a coincidence, but the exchange students were also a boy and a girl around Ethan's age. He didn't have the chance to check the guy for long, but the girl had long, straight black hair that was tied up in a ponytail. She was wearing a yellow sweatshirt and a blue skirt, and orange sneakers. She was quite pretty, and adding to the fact that she had her eyes at the color of ember, she stood out even more. Ethan wanted to avoid her since he wanted to live a peaceful life, and he could tell what she was on about.
"Hello, my name is Hana," The girl said while showing a sweet smile.
Ethan furrowed a bit since it was basically the same as his sister… thanks to his nerdy past, he knew that Hana meant flower or something like that. As for his sister's name, it means favor or grace since it has a Hebrew origin.
"Good for you," Ethan said while showing a smile that didn't have a single hint of soul in it. "Have a nice day."
"Can you tell me your name?" Hana asked while looking unfazed.
"You should know already… I take it that Dante told you about me, am I right?" Ethan asked, and Hana's smile froze.
"... He did say that you were quick to understand things, but not this much," Hana added. "My apologies for acting dumb, Ethan. I hope that we can get along despite this."
"I am not sure… anyway, I am late for my piano lessons," Ethan said and then turned around before leaving. "Dante probably mentioned the other two, so you will have an easier time interacting with them. I am a bit of a curve ball, you see."
Ethan thought that Hannah would insist a bit more. Still, she was far smarter than Ian, and she also considered the feelings of others, unlike Ian, who just acted to his own amusement most of the time. In any case, a new week had started on the previous day, and since his rank had increased, Ethan had to choose new courses as well. He chose the same ones but with a higher rank since he wanted to improve his magic and alchemy skills. Besides, seeing things remaining the same usually made Ethan feel at peace… it was better to leave the surprises for those extraordinary occasions.
In any case, Ethan had a feeling that things would change in one way or the other, and he confirmed that after he played around in the simulator for a while after registering for his new lessons and then saw Ian, Emily, and Hana waiting outside. Emily looked a bit troubled… probably because she didn't want to be rude and leave a bad impression. It was quite the growth considering how she reacted when she met Ethan for the first time.
