Chapter 689 - What Did I Do to Deserve All of This? (1)
The news about her best friend's sudden marriage to Zhang Jiren reached Tang Moyu and she wasn't quite pleased with it. Although she knew Zhang Jiren, it still left a bad taste in her mouth knowing that Li Meili had to marry a Zhang of all people. Still, as long as Zhang Jiren didn't dare to hurt and abuse her best friend, Tang Moyu knew she had no right to interfere now with Li Meili's marriage.
Li Meili had called her that morning, informing her ahead of time that she would be married to Zhang Jiren before the day ended. The empress asked her best friend if Li Meili had truly made up her mind about this and the latter affirmed it. For her best friend to make such a drastic decision, Tang Moyu couldn't help but to blame Zhang Wuying for it.
If only that old woman had a sensible head and hadn't schemed against them for a long time, Li Meili wouldn't have to marry Zhang Jiren like this. It wasn't like Li Meili or the Li family could not protect her and her child, but as a mother, Li Meili didn't want her child to be subjected to pointless legal battles against Zhang Wuying.
Tang Moyu was already dressed, ready to retire for the night, when Feng Tianyi returned from work. Because there were a lot of things he needed to finish back at Xiao Xing, he wasn't able to come home earlier.
"Moyu? You are still awake?" He called out as he strode towards his wife, removing his neck tie as he did.
Tang Moyu slowly turned her body, careful not to put pressure on her injuries that had yet to heal.
"I couldn't sleep." She told her husband, watching him shed his coat before sitting next to her. As much as she wanted to go back to work because she was starting to feel bored at home, she knew that her body needed to recuperate first.
Feng Tianyi gently cupped the side of her face, turning her head gently to draw her in for a kiss. His warm lips touched hers as they shared a sweet kiss, something he could never get tired off.
Tang Moyu allowed herself to sink in his arms, releasing a sigh of relief as his familiar scent reached her nose. She hadn't realized that she was this tense before his arrival.
"Are you worried about Li Meili?" Feng Tianyi allowed her to lean her weight against his as he ran his fingers through her silky long hair.
"Yes. I can't believe she has to marry Zhang Jiren. Isn't this too much for her? We've just lost Beixuan. It's really cruel for them to force her into this marriage." Tang Moyu admitted to her husband.
This was one of the rare times that she couldn't do anything to help Li Meili and she hated it. At such a crucial moment on top of that. Didn't she promise Tang Beixuan that she would look after Li Meili from now on? Yet she couldn't even do anything to lessen the burden on Li Meili's shoulder.
"Don't blame yourself, Moyu. Li Meili isn't a child who can't decide on her own. I'm sure she has given it a good thought before coming to such a decision." Feng Tianyi said in response. He still had yet to tell her about Zhang Jiren's identity.
Would her impression of him change once she found out the truth? He wondered.
Tang Moyu pulled away from his embrace and stared at him. She wasn't sure why but she felt like her husband had been favoring Zhang Jiren ever since the man visited them a few weeks ago and joined them for dinner. She was sure as hell that something had happened that day.
"Tianyi, tell me the truth. You are hiding something from me, aren't you?" She narrowed her eyes on her husband, knowing that he knew something about Zhang Jiren that she didn't.
Feng Tianyi's eyes dramatically widened at her outburst before he released a breath he didn't know he was holding as he ran both hands over his face.
"Alright. You got me. I do have something that I have yet to tell you, but I'm not sure how you will take it." He told her.
Feng Tianyi took her hand in his and marvelled at how her smaller hand fit in his larger one perfectly.
"Moyu, I'm not sure if it's my place to tell you this, but since I almost lost you that day, I know that I would rather lose Zhang Jiren's trust than lose you." He said as he placed her palm on his cheek as he placed a gentle kiss on it.
"Whatever it is, I will listen. I would rather you tell me the truth now than feed me with white lies. You should know me better by now, Tianyi." Tang Moyu told him, seeing the conflicted emotion in his eyes.
What could it be that made her husband act like this? Didn't he say she was her better half? So why couldn't he trust her judgement and keep this from her?
"Remember when you asked me if we could dig deeper and investigate everything about your mother?" Feng Tianyi started, his eyes focused on his wife's facial expression.
"Yes." The empress nodded. It had been months since she asked him for this. Tang Moyu wasn't hopeful that they would find a new lead about her mother and twin brother's death, but she knew she could not continue living without knowing the truth on what truly happened to them.
"Yes, it turned out that we aren't the only one investigating Yan Qiuyu. Someone hired a private investigator to run a background check on your mother twelve years ago."
"And?" So what did Zhang Jiren have to do with it? Was he that person?
"That's Zhang Jiren." Feng Tianyi confirmed, which earned a low curse from the empress.
"That's not all…"
"Then what?" Tang Moyu demanded.
"He is your twin brother."
