Chapter 134: The Aftermath.
Kyle had no plans to take Jane back home, not for a while because he didn't know how safe it was if Mike could just walk right in there and take her.
That was dangerous and he couldn't risk that, even if it was just for tonight.
Kyle looked over his shoulder as he drove back home with Jane fast asleep.
He didn't want to imagine what would have happened to her but was grateful for his system.
Even though the skill obtained from the lottery at that moment didn't help the situation to a great effect, it could be argued that it allowed him to be sneaky.
Or he would have inevitably made a noise or two because there was no way he would be that good at stealth with no prior experience.
Kyle sighed, silently thanking his system but he also knew that he cared about Jane a lot more than he let on.
They arrived at his home and everywhere was quiet, it was well past 2 AM at this point but Kyle didn't care about anything but the sleeping lady beside him.
Kyle left the car and before Jane could process the car came to a halt. Kyle had already opened the passenger door.
"Hey sleepyhead," Kyle greeted her with a smile but Jane couldn't take her eyes off him.
She didn't know why but the way her heart was thumping at this moment showed her that this man had stolen her heart in its entirety.
She had never felt this way about anyone nor did she know an emotion this intense was even possible to begin with yet she was experiencing it right here and now.
Kyle picked her up from her car seat, scooping her up in his arms like she had no weight.
If anything, this was proof that Kyle had gained some muscle mass but it was worrying that he felt no remorse for taking a life despite the circumstances making it an inevitable situation.
He called Priscilla because he understood the gravity of the situation, he couldn't just leave him there to be discovered by anyone.
Kyle also knew that there was no way that Ella would trust him, she didn't know him as well as Jane and Jane was someone that she didn't mess around with.
Even if Light Yagami offered his death note in this situation, Ella would doubt the ink.
Kyle simply told her this because he knew that she would remove him from the equation.
This allowed him to shape the narrative as he pleased with Priscilla even though he would have preferred for the conditions to be less risky.
It all worked out in the end because it would clear him of any potential investigation but Kyle also knew how important it was to have someone within the police force on his side.
And he had chosen Priscilla for that.
He took Jane to his place, carrying her like a princess. Jane pretended to be alright but Kyle noticed that she was trembling in his arms.
She was consciously trying to suppress it but Kyle didn't say anything because he knew that she would be self-conscious.
They got into his apartment and he laid her on the couch like she was some fragile egg.
"You're safe…" Kyle reassured her. He didn't know how much of a hold this traumatic event would have on her but he knew that she needed time to herself.
"I know what happened tonight was scary but I don't want you to think you need to be strong for me. You don't," Kyle told her and the moment these words left his lips, she broke down in tears.
"I-I was so scared Kyle!" Jane confessed, barely able to get her words out.
Kyle looked at her with compassion and hated that this happened to her.
Even if she wasn't raped, the thought that it was going to happen must have scared the living shit out of her.
Kyle sat beside her, he didn't say a word because he knew that she needed to feel her feelings.
She wasn't looking for words to make her feel better, she was looking for someone to be present which she could not feel okay with.
Jane sobbed in his arms and the night passed away with both of them feeling closer than ever.
-
The incident didn't make the news but this was partly due to fears of a potential retaliation by whatever gang Mike was associated with.
This was the man they had been looking for as his DNA, most notably, his semen had been found in different crimes.
He was in the system already long before he was taken in for this particular crime but the DNA obtained from those crime scenes never linked back to him. Priscilla knew it had to be him because these crimes were as violent as the ones that he was accused of committing.
He only got off due to a technicality and that was the semen sample not matching the blood they had in the system but Priscilla presented a theory that was immediately shot down by her superior.
And that was the possibility that the suspect had two sets of DNA, this was possible due to a very rare congenital condition called Chimerism.
This was also partly due to the department cutting back on expenses and didn't feel the need to carry out other tests.
Priscilla saw his dead body and instantly knew this was the same man even though he went by a different name now, which was Mike.
This man was called Clarence Thomas and there was no reason for him to change his name.
But with his body in their possession, she was able to extract sufficient DNA and run the appropriate test to confirm the theory she had had for months.
And it came back positive, Clarence had artificial chimerism, it was because he had bone marrow, and this effectively changed his DNA.
He was committing crimes right under the nose of the police and this little abnormality allowed him to commit crimes under the radar for so long.
She was grateful that Kyle managed to put a bullet through his head because this solved and gave a few unsolved cases an ending that would bring the family closure.
