Jing Yichen smiled helplessly. He extended his hands to pat Shangguan Ning’s smooth hair and answered her positively, “Yes, but she was never my fiancée, so please don’t call her that.”
Shangguan Ning thought that he would deny the statement, but he admitted it!
She instantly glared at Jing Yichen, and her eyes burned with fire. It looked as if she would roast him to death with her look if Jing Yichen didn’t give her a satisfying answer.
Fearing that they were headed towards a misunderstanding, Jing Yichen explained quickly, “I got to know her when I was participating in a tennis contest. She was watching me play the game at the court and got hit by my ball. She was seriously injured and I couldn’t have left her alone. That’s how we got to know each other. Later, she would come to watch me play tennis whenever there was a chance and she tagged along with me all the time, even when I went to the gym or to the school. She would take away my pictures and would even follow me home! So everyone in the family knew about her.”
Finally, at this moment did Shangguan Ning understand that Tang Yun had stolen all of the pictures which Jing Yichen painted and that he had never given her a picture himself. How could she have acted so proudly and happily as if she were speaking the truth.
“I barely talked with her. Actually, I refused to talk with her or anybody else. So she was no one special. But when I was practicing tennis back then, she stayed by my side every single day. I tried to drive her off many times, but it didn’t work. So I just did my own thing, pretending that she didn’t exist. There was one time when she was teased by some gangsters when she was watching me play. So I punched those gangsters when I realized that I should not just have left her at their mercy.”
Jing Yichen sounded calm, not at all emotional as if he were talking about something unrelated to him at all.
But after being with him for so long, Shangguan Ning understood him well. She knew that he must be mentioning the memory that he didn’t want to look back upon and was trying to numb himself.
She suddenly blamed herself. What was the point of making him suffer by reminding him of these things when all was in the past?
“Alright, Yichen, you don’t need to say anything more. Actually, I know pretty well that nothing has been going on between you and Tang Yun. I know that she was just trying to piss me off and separate us by telling me those stories. I won’t be cheated again. I trust you!”
Holding her soft hands tightly, Jing Yichen planted a kiss on her forehead and said calmly, “It is alright. I have never talked about these matters with anyone, and no one knows about it except for Tiger who has been by my side for so long. I feel much relieved to have told you about them today.”
Shangguan Ning nodded and said softly, “Okay, if you can feel better, you can tell me. If you don’t feel comfortable about it, then we will never mention it again.”
Jing Yichen answered with a short “hmm” and then said calmly, “Tang Yun almost died for me because of these men. So after she went missing, I stopped playing tennis, because whenever I held the racket, I would be reminded of Tang Yun who used to stand by my side and the day when she and I experienced the dreadful event.”
He paused at this moment and then said again, “After so many years I became less influenced by this matter. But I had already given up playing and didn’t pick it up... until I met you and saw you play. I decided to take it up again because I felt like approaching you subconsciously but I didn’t have any suitable excuse. So I decided to get to know you better by playing tennis with you.”
“Oh? So you had thought about chasing me at that time already? I thought you were just trying to take revenge for your cousin!” Shangguan Ning looked at Jing Yichen with her head tilted. She wanted to make sure that he was telling the truth.
A tiny smile finally hovered over Jing Yichen’s lips. He said, “Anan was just a connecting point. I wouldn’t have known how to approach you without her. I am not sure if I wanted to chase you back then, but it was the first time in my life when I wanted to approach someone. Even a rough man like Tiger could sense my unusualness, so... may that was it.”
Shangguan Ning’s eyes lit up when she heard the answer that pleased her.
“Ning, did you just say that Tang Yun know about me giving up the tennis ten years ago. But does she know the reason for my picking it up again?”
Jing Yichen was much sharper than Shangguan Ning. A question had instantly arisen in his brain when he heard her question. But he still explained to Shangguan Ning the entire matter first and asked about it after she understood the entire sequence of events.
Shangguan Ning nodded and asked in confusion, “Umm, she knew that you gave up tennis, but she doesn’t seem to know that you have started playing again. Why? What is wrong?”
Jing Yichen frowned slightly as he said, “Only a few people knew about me giving up tennis. Most people thought that I gave it up because I had no time. Tang Yun said that she was oblivious during the past decade and didn’t get back the memory until recently. Then how did she know that I gave up tennis? If she researched, she would have known that I had picked up playing again.”
Shangguan Ning also felt something weird after hearing his words.
Unless Tang Yun didn’t lose her memory and had kept an eye out for Jing Yichen on the sly. Otherwise she would not have known about what happened to him during the past decade!
But if she didn’t lose the memory and she loved Jing Yichen so much, why didn’t she come to find him of her own accord? She was his savoir and as long as she appeared in front of Jing Yichen, she would have definitely been taken great care of, as a princess!
Or even... she might really have become Jing Yichen’s fiancée!
But she didn’t. Instead, she kept herself hidden and refused to be found by Jing Yichen!
Both of them shivered as the cool breeze blew.
Jing Yichen took off his overcoat and draped it over Shangguan Ning. Then he draped his arm around her shoulders and walked towards home.
“Don’t overthink. I will look into the matter. What you need to do is to eat, sleep and take good care of yourself. Don’t get sick and be happy. That is the most important of all.”
“I have gained several kilos! I have almost become a pig!”
“Oh, really? Then Mrs. Pig, when will you give birth to a little piggy for me?”
Shangguan Ning chuckled hearing how he addressed her. She laughed as she said, “My baby will definitely be smart and lovely. He won’t be a piggy so you mustn’t say anything bad about him!”
“Alright, alright, my son won’t be a piggy. He will be the smartest and the loveliest. You can teach him to read and to write whilst I will spank him if he doesn’t keep in line.”
“No, no, no, I will be the spanker, and you will be the teacher. You are an excellent student. I better not teach him, or I will not have a chance to fight back if the son becomes as smart as you.”
Jing Yichen couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s your call, baby. But before everything happens, we probably need to have a son first!”
