Chapter 36 - Shopping (Edited)
Holiday Week :-
Early in the morning a cute, gothic, loli dragon's childish voice could be heard in the Kobayashi mansion. "I wanna go to school!"
Two sets of dead fish-like eyes, one less dreadful than the other due to its recent improvement, locked onto Kanna's figure immediately after hearing her demand. If said eyes were to look at her like that a few weeks ago Kanna would've been frozen stiff, but like everything else about being a human, Kanna had adapted to their eyes too, It was still intimidating but she did not fear them anymore because they were attached to the two people who meant the world to her, her family, the ones she dearly loved. The staredown by the duo came to a halt as Kobayashi's confused voice reached Kanna's cute ears. "Why so sudden, Kanna-chan?"
"Wait Oba-san, I'll ask. Kanna-chan, can you tell me the reason you want to go to school so suddenly, is there a problem or something of sorts on your mind?" Kyle dotingly asked his little sister, his tone affectionate and filled with brotherly care, he knew the reason but he still needed to clarify it to the others.
Kanna's response was straightforward and without hesitation, "Because it looks fun!"
Kobayashi touched her glasses, adjusted it a bit and sighed, she couldn't help but ask. "That's it?"
"Yes that's it!" Kanna cutely raised her hands above her head, posing charmingly, she looked absolutely adorable, like the most adorable doll in existence. The Kobayashi duo's thoughts were the same. 'How could such a creature so adorable exist?!!'
Kyle now out of his sis-con induced stupor at Kanna's overwhelming cuteness responded with a smile. "Okay then, let's get you enrolled in a kindergarten."
"Really?"
"Yes, Kanna-chan you're going to school as soon as possible." He smiled, a smile full of brotherly affection, a telltale sign of a sis-con. Kyle knew for a fact that he had to enroll the gothic loli into a school eventually. So he mused the sooner he got it done the better it would be. This was a necessary step for the dragon loli to fully integrate into and accept the humans that were not the Kobayashi duo.
"Yaaay!" Kanna was very happy to get her request accepted. She tackled Kyle and hugged him with affection and adoration. Nuzzling her head in his torso cutely, she showed her love for her elder brother, she was full throttle on the way to becoming a bro-con, if she didn't already that is.
'Worth it! As long as she's happy I'm fine with anything.' Kyle thought, happy that his little sister was happy. Very few things in this world were able to give the bored delivery boy as much happiness as seeing Kanna smile did.
The heartwarming session between the loving siblings was put to an abrupt end by Kobayashi San's inquiring, slightly indignant words. "Wait, wait! Aren't you going to ask for my permission first?!"
"Of course, Oba-san, however you're still going to agree anyway right?"
"W-well… of course I would, Kanna-chan is a child after all she needs education… but still I hate the way you can read me like a book." Kobayashi San was annoyed, Kyle's surefire confident tone annoyed her, he could always read her like a book no matter the time, it was like he could read her mind, she could hide nothing from his eyes and this severely annoyed her and simultaneously made her feel gratified for having a nephew who understood her so well. Kyle knew her on a base level, knew her wants, her goals, she didn't know if she could ever find someone who could understand her as much as Kyle, well what she knew for a fact was that when she did she would be marrying that guy immediately.
"Ahahaha, that's natural Oba-san, I lived with you for more than a decade already, it's only natural for me to know you so well, it's very normal." He smirked at his aunt, said aunt's annoyance rose a few points higher seeing the little brat of a nephew of hers being so smug.
"You know what, that smirk of yours is really annoying…sigh* anyhow, since you're going to enroll her in a school then you should buy her some school supplies along with it."
"Of course, but I don't know the school supplies that are required for kindergarten students."
"True, okay then I'll enroll her right now so that I could ask for the requirements."
Afterwards Kobayashi San brought Kanna to the nearest kindergarten, with a good education program, she could find. Kyle followed along, he didn't have anything to do in the house and if he were to stay he'd idle away his time by playing on the PS4 or PC so he thought he might as well just tag along and note Kanna's school location in his mind to occasionally pick her up if need be.
Of course he also had ulterior motives, he wanted to see Kanna have fun with friends her, outer appearance wise, age group, to see her happily spend her time and maybe spend some quality brother sister bonding time with her after school. As it was stated previously spending time with this cute little sister of his was one of the most enjoyable things to this delivery boy of otherworldly dimensions.
..

..
The enrollment process wasn't long, it was super fast in fact. The requirements were also very simple: a uniform for kindergarten students, pencil, kindergarten themed notebooks, backpack, eraser, ruler amongst other things.
His aunt had delegated him with the duty to buy Kanna's scholarly necessities, Kyle accepted at a heartbeat and was preparing to leave by himself, Kanna however insisted to follow him to buy her supplies, she also had preferences, she wouldn't allow anyone to pick for herself not even her dear elder brother.
He couldn't reject this lovely little sister of his, so he of course let her follow along with him and pick whatsoever she desired, Tohru had an objection to this however, like she always had, a dragon of jealousy instead of chaos she was, she insisted to come along with them and help them in their shopping trip.
Kyle didn't refuse her, he knew something ominous may occur if he tried so he just accepted, it wasn't like he was averse to the idea of spending time with the dragon maid, in fact he would be glad to do it. "Alright, but don't cause trouble okay?"
"I'm not a child that needs to be reminded like that… of course I know not to trouble you." She grumbled, the cheerful dragon maid was a bit sulky, she was also a bit mad at the love of her life, his constant treatment of her like that of a child irked her greatly. It pained her to see him treat her like that. She wanted him to treat her like a woman, not a little girl who he needs to remind every single thing of.
He immediately realized that Tohru's mood had become foul because of his unneeded reminder, Kyle wasn't an empath, he couldn't read emotions and expressions of a person, he admitted that he was able to read more than the average person could but it was not on that level of mind reading that some anime characters were capable of. No, Kyle was able to understand Tohru's emotions at that moment or at any moment because Tohru had never made even the bare minimum efforts to hide her emotions from him, she had always been open to him, laid herself bare for him to see, that's how much Tohru trusted him. Kyle was able to realize his mistake, he immediately apologized not even willing to delve on the prospect of maddening or hurting Tohru, at least intentionally. Kyle didn't let it show but he cared about Tohru deeply, she was already a part of his family, at the very least he had a greater meaning to him than those almost non-existent parents of his.
"Tohru, sorry i don't mean it in a bad way…"
"Yeah I know that, but it's just irritating… for you to treat me as a child.."
"My bad, how about this for my apology let's go on a date with just the two of us, just kiddi-
"Huh?! Really?! That's a promise, okay!" Tohru immediately jumped on the opportunity of being able to go on a date with Kyle. She couldn't and didn't want to hear his words; already lost in her delusional world where there was only her and Kyle doing God (The real ones yeah it means us not the shitty Delivery Gods like Kyle) knows what.
"Tohru? Tohru? Hey?" So lost in her realm of delusions was Tohru that she didn't even hear Kyle anymore. Kyle had actually wanted to say that he was joking about the date. He should've known better, knowing Tohru's personality, she would've never passed on the opportunity to date him. What he didn't expect was for Tohru to be so lost that she would lose all hearing capabilities, maybe he should start reassessing the affection Tohru felt for him, from the looks of it, she was already too far gone and if he thought correctly soon it would be impossible for her to keep it in and she would openly admit her affection for him, he needed to be prepared for that, to answer her affection, he needed to reassess his own feelings and desires, his own worth, this was probably the most important decision of his life.
Kyle again looked at Tohru, her dazed expression was lovely, he scratched his cheeks instinctively, chuckling a bit awkwardly, her happy expression was a blissful sight, he wouldn't be a man if he were to tear it apart by stating he was joking, he would really become a loathsome bastard if he did… besides Kyle himself had wanted to go on a date with her for a long time now, but even with two lives lived, he had zero experience with women, so it was really hard for him to ask her out for once. He knew that she would admit in a heartbeat, just like she did now, even if he were to ask her haphazardly, but what could he do, being as isolated and neglected as he was, the prospect of asking someone out on a date scared him of the bitter possibility of rejection, even if he knew otherwise, old habits die hard, waiting for the perfect opportunity, well he kept on waiting and the askance never occurred. He realized that there was no perfect opportunity for some cases, for someone like Tohru a straightforward inquiry would've been for the best.
Now, on the pretence of a joke, well maybe it wasn't one after all as he now thought carefully, anyhow, what mattered was that a chance had arrived and he didn't want to waste this opportunity. Ever since becoming something resembling the word God, he had gained enough confidence to try and change this stalemate of a relationship he had with Tohru, she loved him, he was interested in her, not just for her body as some may think, but also for what Tohru as a person was, so he wanted for them to be more than just friends they pretended to be, hiding their desires beneath that thin veil of pretense. He was still nothing, not even a speck if compared to her but with this 'Divinity' acquired he was sure that it was only a matter of time before he had the ability to stand next to her and someday stand before her and protect her from all the harms and throes life could give her. For now, what he wanted was to break this stalemate and finally take that first step forward.
…
…
Shopping Trip :-
He had originally thought that this shopping trip would've been a quick one, sadly he had underestimated Kanna's tastes, she was a woman after all… in the end of the day they visited several shops only to have ended up in the mall.
Tohru seemingly had a trauma about malls, no to be specific she had trauma with all structures that seemed like the fortresses of her world. She had a very traumatic experience of getting hunted every time she had knowingly or unknowingly come across a fortress. This was one of the reasons she never liked coming to the mall, but for Kyle and Kanna she relented and endured this uncomfortableness she felt in her whole being.
Kyle noticed the distortion in the dragon maid's expression, felt her uncomfortableness, so he inquired softly in a worried tone. "Tohru, are you alright?"
Hearing him, Tohru forcefully smiled and replied, a bit drained already. "Y-yeah I'm fine.."
It was very obvious that she wasn't fine, Kyle didn't know what to do so he just did whatever first came to his mind. "Hey... wanna hold hands?"
"Eh?" Tohru's eyes widened in surprise, she couldn't believe she had just heard, she double checked although she ended up stuttering as a result.
"C-c-can you repeat it?"
"I said... wanna hold hands?" He didn't make excuses, he knew that what he had just offered might be able to lift Tohru's disturbed aura and he didn't want to see Tohru disturbed. Besides, he didn't find holding hands to be a big deal anyways, weebs in their jealousy just blew it out of proportion by calling it lewd, he didn't give two cents to their opinions.
Confirmation received, Tohru practically shouted. "Yes!"
Immeasurable happiness drowned all the discomfort immediately, she shyly lifted her palm and went for Kyle's, holding it softly, tenderly but with a solid grip, a grip that spoke of its want to never be parted from where it felt it belonged.
Kyle responded in kind, still glancing at her in worry, he asked. "Are you still uncomfortable?"
She shook her head, she smiled, a smile so beautiful that it could melt anyone's heart in its warmth. "No! Right now I feel comfortable and happy."
So stunning was her smile, so radiant, so beautiful, Kyle blushed a little in infatuation as a result. She was beautiful beyond doubt and comprehension. It was hard for him to keep his cool, but he was able to... barely. "Is that so? I'm glad."
The atmosphere turned a bit flirty, but little Kanna interjected at the moment with a voice of utter excitement. "Kyle! Kyle! Let's go there!"
Awkwardness washed over the adult duo. None of them had the plans to stop holding hands however, after Kanna's constant urges and gathering his resolve pushing the awkwardness to behind of his head, he softly inquired. "Let's go?"
"Mhm." Tohru nodded meekly, that radiant, heart throbbingly beautiful smile never leaving her pink lips.
They followed the enthusiastic Kanna, still holding hands, still stealing each other's glances, still smiling their own smiles, their minds drifting with thoughts known and unknown. Nobody knew what they were thinking, but whatever it was, it was bound to be beautiful.
