Chapter 184
“It’s not something I heard with my ears, but with my heart,” Chen Shu said, pointing to her chest. “I can empathize deeply with them, so I can hear their inner voices.”
Fang Rui continued, “Did you incite Ye Yu to kill her grandmother by burning charcoal?”
Chen Shu immediately defended herself, “That was an accident. Ye Yu only wanted to help her grandmother stay warm. No one intended to kill her.”
She went on, “Ye Yu’s grandmother had heart disease, and I had originally planned to kill her with digoxin. But when she had her first attack, she begged for her life with all her strength. The scene of her desperate struggle to survive shocked me.
“I couldn’t understand it. She lived such a miserable life, paralyzed in bed, blind, and her children didn’t care for her. Yet, she still wanted to live. I couldn’t comprehend why someone would want to live in such a dehumanizing condition.
“Later, I thought this might be the resilience of life. Or perhaps, for this elderly woman who had endured so much hardship, the pain she was experiencing wasn’t much compared to what she had already been through. She had lived through far more painful and humiliating situations in her life.
“I only kill the elderly who truly wish to die, so I abandoned my plan to murder her!”
Chen Shu’s words were convincing, but Fang Rui sensed something was off.
First, neighbors of Ye Yu’s grandmother had reported that she often complained about her children’s lack of filial piety, saying she was an old, unwanted burden who wished she could die sooner. This suggested that Ye Yu’s grandmother had suicidal tendencies.
Second, if Chen Shu didn’t want to kill Ye Yu’s grandmother, why did she continue to visit the Ye household multiple times under the guise of being from a hospital?n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Since Chen Shu had already admitted to her crimes, why would she lie about Ye Yu’s grandmother? Fang Rui speculated that Chen Shu might be trying to protect Ye Yu and cover up the truth.
He exchanged a glance with Lin Sen, who also seemed to think she was lying.
Fang Rui asked, “What about Sun Guanghua?”
“I killed him. I added insulin to his IV bag. His blood sugar was already low, and I used a large dose of insulin, causing his blood sugar to drop rapidly.
“He often told me how much pain he was in, how his whole body hurt, and how he wanted to die quickly. He begged his children to let him return home, but they refused. So, I had to help him ‘go home’ this way.”
After detailing the murder process, Chen Shu smiled. She didn’t feel she had committed a crime.
She asked, “Am I guilty for helping those desperate lives end?”
Lin Sen countered, “How do you know if they were truly desperate, or if they were just temporarily unable to bear the pain and wanted to die? When people are in pain, they may have suicidal thoughts, but once the pain subsides, they might want to live again!
“How do you determine if they are completely hopeless? If you placed a poison and a painkiller in front of them, which do you think they would choose?”
This is also one of the reasons why euthanasia is not yet legalized—because we cannot determine if someone truly wants to die or if they are merely seeking an escape from their suffering.
Chen Shu retorted passionately, “You’ve never taken care of those paralyzed patients, so you don’t understand them! You can’t empathize with them! I’ve taken care of many such patients, I understand their despair and pain.”
Chen Shu calmed herself down and said, “The first person I killed was my grandmother. She had been bedridden for over three years. When I went home during summer vacation, I found her lying on a bed soaked in feces and urine. She was emaciated and moaning in pain. When she saw me, she pleaded with her eyes for me to kill her!
“I didn’t use any drugs or deceptive methods. I smothered her with a blanket when no one was around. No one noticed. Her children’s first reaction was to dress her in funeral clothes and quickly send her body for cremation.
“Later, when I started working in the hospital, I killed many elderly people, but no one ever discovered it. If it weren’t for Ye Yu’s mother making a fuss, it might never have been found out. Even if someone suspected the cause of death, they wouldn’t investigate deeply. In their eyes, the death of these patients was a relief.”
After leaving the interrogation room, Lin Sen said, “She’s probably lying. The story about her grandmother is likely fabricated.”
Fang Rui immediately investigated Chen Shu’s background.
The investigation quickly yielded results.
Chen Shu’s grandmother had passed away when she was just one year old. There was no way she could have killed her grandmother herself.
Chen Shu’s mother had given birth to her out of wedlock. Later, Chen Shu’s mother was involved in a car accident and became a vegetable. Her mother’s household registration had not been canceled, which indicated she was likely still alive.
Zhang wondered, “Why would she fabricate her own experiences?”
Lin Sen analyzed, “I need to correct my earlier assumption. She’s probably not a psychopathic killer. She fabricated her experiences to justify her motives for murder, thereby concealing her true motives.”
“What could her true motive be?”
Mu Mian said, “It might have something to do with those light green pills. We’ve already conducted toxicological tests on those pills, and they’re not poisonous. After analyzing their composition, we found they are quite complex and do not match any existing drugs on the market. It’s a completely new synthetic drug.
“It contains gangliosides and nerve growth factors, which are essential for brain nerve regeneration. It’s reasonable to suspect that this drug is meant to repair brain damage. The people Chen Shu killed were likely test subjects for this drug.”
Fang Rui added, “Previously, the autistic patients at Star Home were also used as test subjects. Could there be a connection between the two?”
Everyone fell silent. If this was true, then Chen Shu certainly wasn’t acting alone.
Fang Rui interrogated Chen Shu again.
Fang Rui asked, “We found a light green pill on Ye Yu’s grandmother’s bed. Did you give it to her?”
“No. What light green pill? I don’t know anything about it. I never gave her such a pill.”
Fang Rui said, “Ye Yu has already told us everything.”
“What did she tell you?” Chen Shu scoffed. “There’s no such thing. What could she possibly tell you? Are you trying to trick me into confessing?”
“The elderly you killed were all used as test subjects for your drug, weren’t they? Who are your accomplices?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“What is that drug used for?”
“Fang Rui, I’ve already admitted my crimes and explained my motives and the process. If you continue to press me, you’ll be accused of mistreating a suspect. I’ll hire a lawyer to sue you!”
