Chapter 156: Tetanus
"Lord Julian?"
"Why are you here?"
Gavin and the rest rushed to greet the man. Seeing how eager they were, Damien frowned slightly.
"He is Julian Patterson, the heir of the Patterson family who rules the north of Brystoria," Xavier explained upon seeing the confusion on Damien's face. "Or they used; their situation is more or less similar to the Wolfe family in the east."
"They are being suppressed by someone?"
"You can say that."
Damien's brows furrowed when he heard Xavier's response; he truly could not understand how anyone could be this stupid. If he was sitting on the throne instead of Emiliano, he would have been respectful and considerate of the heroes and their families who had once protected the borders of this land.
Instead of doing everything possible to offend them.
"Good day, my lord," Damien greeted the man out of courtesy. "I am Damien De Brystoria. It's nice to meet you." Continue reading on мѵʟ
'This man. He has mana but it's really weak. Is he really capable?' thought Julian with a light frown on his face. However, when he recalled the grieving and helpless words of the healer, he knew that other than Carl, no one might be able to save Jami.
As for the chances, they were slim even if the high-ranking priest was to come here and treat Jami.
He didn't want that.
He wanted a 99% chance of recovery, not 9.
"Are you the doctor here?" Lord Julian asked. He pivoted on his heels and pointed at Jami, who was being carried in the arms of the beastman. "Can you treat him?"
"I need to check on his injury first." Damien took off his gloves and looked at Julian. "Without it, I cannot tell you whether I can save this man or not."
Julian glanced at him lightly before saying, "Then go ahead."
Only then did Damien walk past him and ask the beastman who was carrying Jami on the makeshift stretcher. Once the patient was lying still, Damien crouched down and started examining his wounds.
The man had a laceration on the upper half of his body. Though his rectus abdominis was damaged, the blood vessels were fine. As long as Damien stopped the severe bleeding, the man would be fine.
Julian waited for three minutes and when he did not receive a response from Damien, he couldn't help but ask, "Can you save him?"
"His wound is critical," Damien replied, causing Julian to clench his fingers. His hope started to slip through. However, before Julian could lose all hope, he heard Damien say, "But there is still hope, so I can possibly save him."
"You mean to say that you can really save him?" Julian asked while trembling. He was filled with relief as he felt the weight on his shoulders ease down a bit.
"Yes, I can," Damien stood up from the ground. "It's not a difficult wound to heal."
"Then treat him quickly," Julian said to Damien.
But Damien knew how to manage his patients; though this man was injured gravely, he was not in a life-threatening condition compared to the rest.
So he shook his head and relayed, "I will treat him once I am done with the rest. Till then, help him rest over there." He pointed to a clean corner before walking over to his next patient.
"Hey! What do you mean by "you will treat him later on?" Julian caught hold of his forearm and pulled Damien back. "You have to treat him now! He is my uncle; how can you—"
"My lord, your uncle's injury is not life-threatening," Damien shrugged off the hold that the man had on his arm. "Even if his injury is delayed a bit, he will be able to survive but as for the rest, they don't have that much of a time. If I save your uncle first, then those whose condition is not good will die."
"Are you going to choose your uncle over the rest of the soldiers who had worked and sacrificed just as your uncle?"
The grip on his arm loosened, and Damien turned on his feet before pulling on his clean and sanitised gloves. "In the emergency room, there is no such thing as uncle, sister, or mother—doctors do not care about what your relationship with the patient is; they will only save those who are gravely injured before moving forward with the light injuries."
"And as a doctor, I will do the same. So it will be better if you step aside and let me do my job. I will take a look at your uncle when I am done treating these soldiers whose lives are hanging by a thread!"
Julian stared at the man, feeling a bit uncomfortable and confused. This was the first time someone had refused him; usually healers and officials alike would listen to his orders to get the little fame that they were chasing. But at the same time, he respected Damien for standing up to him and putting his point so sternly.
"My lord!" A soldier rushed inside the tent as he glanced at the patients with a worried look on his face. "The group of the Mega Porcupine that we pushed back has returned. They are now attacking the village at the borders; if this goes on, then they will certainly kill everyone in the village. There are a bunch of pregnant beast women in there."
Julian looked at the man before turning to glance at Damien, who was focused on taking out the large porcupine needle that was sticking out from the side of the beastman's neck.
"I will leave my soldiers in your care," he said to Damien. "Make sure to save as many as possible."
Damien's lips curled behind the mask as he pulled part of the needle and threw it on the tray. He said to the man, "You don't need to tell me this; I will definitely save every single one of these soldiers if I can!"
